The Narcissism of the Invisible Hand: Why Our Economy is Indecent
I want to ask you a question that we rarely hear in political debates or on the news: Do we actually want a decent society? It sounds like a simple "yes," right? But if we really wanted a decent society, we would have to face the fact that our economics are fundamentally indecent.
I’ve spent years looking at the data and living the reality of the American "farm." I can tell you that we have incentivized and enabled narcissism to the point of total systemic dysfunction. We aren't just living in a bad economy; we are living in a psychological experiment gone wrong.
To fix this, we have to pull back the curtain on the stories we’ve been told. We have to look at the "Invisible Hand" not as a guiding force, but as something much more sinister. Honestly, I do this blog because all decisions are essentially economic decisions. I want humanity to make the right choice before the clock runs out.
The Fist in the Puppet
We are taught in every intro economics class about Adam Smith’s "Invisible Hand." The idea is that if everyone acts in their own narrow self-interest, a magical force will balance everything out for the common good. But let’s be real about what that looks like in the 21st century.
That invisible hand isn't gently guiding the market; it’s a fist up your rear, puppeting you. It forces you to move, consume, and work in ways that serve a system that doesn't care if you live or die. It’s a mechanism of control disguised as a philosophy of freedom.
When self-interest becomes the only metric for success, we stop seeing other people as humans. We start seeing them as resources to be extracted or obstacles to be removed. This is the definition of systemic narcissism, and it has become the bedrock of our global market.
The Architects of the Nightmare
I didn't think the rich could truly be this blind to reality. I expected that, at some point, those in power would take responsibility while they were still in a position to help. Instead, we see them enriching themselves further while the literal and metaphorical world burns around them.
We have to talk about the generation that steered us into this storm. Mark my words: the Boomer generation will go down as the most indecent generation in human history. This isn't just about "age gap" bickering; it’s about the measurable destruction of the atmosphere and the economy.
The fact that many in that generation still see themselves as the "Greatest Generation" or the architects of prosperity says everything. They will tell you they gave us industrialization and the internal combustion engine. What they really gave us was a planet-sized problem and a debt that every generation after them will have to endure.
Drinking Our Milkshake
The Boomer generation didn't just inherit a functioning society; they inherited the most prosperous middle class in history. Then, they systematically pulled up every ladder they climbed on their way to the top. They deregulated the banks, slashed the taxes for the ultra-wealthy, and turned housing into a speculative trap.
They created record inequality and then made the country a massive burden to work and live in. But the worst part isn't even the theft—it’s the gaslighting. They relentlessly tell us that if we can’t afford a home or a family, it’s because we aren't working hard enough or we bought too much avocado toast.
By any real measure, this is an indecent way to lead a society. They dressed up their destruction as a gift of prosperity. They drank our collective milkshake, wiped their mouths, and then told us they did it because they love us. It is a sick, twisted narrative that we have to stop accepting.
The Dysfunction Hits the Top
This dysfunction isn't just going to hurt the poor and the marginalized. Eventually, it will affect the elites, too. A society cannot function when the bottom 90% can no longer afford to participate in the "market."
These narcissistic fools will change, but only by necessity when the system finally stops yielding the "rent" they crave. My fear is that they won't recognize their blunder until it is far too late to fix the foundation. You cannot have a kingdom if there is no land left to rule and no people left to work it.
The reason I write this, and the reason I publish my music and books, is because people don't understand the truth yet. They feel the pain, but they don't see the gears of the machine. I hope this work gets to the right people in time to spark a real shift in how we value human life over capital.
Choosing a Decent Future
A decent society requires fair economics. It requires us to stop rewarding the most narcissistic traits in our species and start rewarding cooperation and sustainability. We have to move away from the "extractive farm" model and toward a model of mutual dignity.
I believe humanity can make the right choice, but we are running out of runway. We are being asked to solve the greatest crisis in history with tools that were designed to create that very crisis. We have to be brave enough to admit that the old "Invisible Hand" story was a lie.
We have to stop letting the "money changers" and the "cloud lords" dictate the terms of our existence. We are the ones who provide the labor, the data, and the lifeblood of this country. It is time we started acting like it.
Seeing the Farm for What It Is
The first step to freedom is recognizing you are in a cage. The "American Dream" is the carrot on the stick, but the stick is what’s actually moving the economy. Once you see the fences, you can’t unsee them.
I’ve spent my life documenting this "farm" from the inside. I’ve seen how the disability system, the housing market, and the corporate-controlled government work together to keep us small. But awareness is the beginning of the end for any oligarchy.
We have to demand an economy that serves the people, not the other way around. We have to hold the "greatest generation" and the elites accountable for the burden they’ve placed on our shoulders. We deserve a world where hard work actually pays off and where a decent life isn't a luxury for the few.
